KOMYO-IN, A SUB-TEMPLE OF TOFUKU-JI

Komyo-in was founded in 1391, during the early Muromachi period, by Kinzan Myosho as a sub-temple of Tofuku-ji.
Its main garden, Hashin-tei, was designed by Mirei Shigemori, one of the most celebrated Japanese garden designers of the twentieth century. The garden presents an exquisite harmony of moss and stone.

Seasonal plants, including satsuki azaleas and rhododendrons, can be enjoyed throughout Hashin-tei. During the exhibition, visitors will also be able to admire the beautiful autumn foliage from the Main Hall and the temple’s other rooms.
The seasonal colours reflected against the white sand symbolising the open sea and the garden’s richly textured moss can sometimes resemble a rainbow. Perhaps for this reason, Komyo-in is affectionately known as the “Rainbow Moss Temple.”
